I would like to advise anyone who is considering in hiring this company, to reconsider your decision especially, if you have limited funds to hire an attorney. I would also like to mention, this review is to educate and bring awareness to those in the Ocala, Daytona and rural areas who may be vulnerable to greedy companies like Defend Ocala, while also being extremely understaffed.\n\nJeff requested $4,000 to work on my family member’s case based on the charges he researched. Upon paying, he requested an additional $2,000 a day later, AFTER we already agreed on the final amount, claiming he would need the additional funds for the extra victim in the case, which was not true. I requested him to send this in writing, explaining the reasoning for the additional cost before I would send anything else. Now, if you go to their website, the mission statement states you will pay a fixed flat fee which will cover everything from beginning to end of the case. However, they can mysteriously request additional funds for work that hasn’t been worked on yet.\n\nOn day 3, I received a call from Brett introducing himself and claims he would be working on the case moving forward and if I had any questions or concerns to contact him or his assistant , Dawn. The very next day, I contacted Brett and through out the entire week on multiple occasions. No response. I reached out to Dawn who initially tells me she works in family law and is learning on the job to cover someone who is on maternity leave. Dawn couldn’t answer any of my questions correctly. Instead of forwarding my questions and concerns to Brett, she decided to give me misleading information in regards to my family members case. Also, I had to assist her to look up the case because she was having difficulties looking any up. Now if you didn’t know, family & criminal law are 2 distinct legal processes. I mean the level of professionalism and communication was not there. Therefore, I decided to take matters into my own hands and get a second opinion else where. After 2 weeks of hell, unanswered questions from Brett, misleading information from Dawn and money hungry Jeff, this led me to requesting for a refund of the retainer paid. Jeff denied the refund of the difference and couldn’t provide any documentation of work that was done so I could forward to the new attorney. And the reason I requested a refund for the difference was because I requested Jeff to show up via zoom to the first appearance which was on the same day I hired him.\n\nThankfully, I was able to hire another attorney who not only was trustworthy from beginning to end but also answered ALL my questions and concerns, was extremely passionate about their career AND charged less AND was able to get all charges dropped in less than 3 weeks. Check the photos section of this Google business page for screenshots of the text messages she sent me.<br> <br>For those interested in the truth, here's what really happened:<br><br>1. Ashley called on a Friday monring. Her brother was arrested in Tallahassee on a Marion County warrant and being held with no bond. He was supposed to walk at his college graduation that evening & Ashley and her family were panicked. We agreed to take the case & appear at his Tallahassee first appearance for a non refundable fee of $4000. Ashley agreed to the fee being non refundable.<br><br>2. Ashley appeared with me at the first appearance. That is when we learned of a second case. Evidently, Ashley's brother was accused of scamming multiple people's bank accounts on multiple occasions. More cases means more evidence to review, more victims to deal with, and more work for the lawyer. Therefore, a second case means an additional fee. That morning I got the police reports for Ashley before they were publicly available. She saw for herself there were multiple cases & more work. For some reason, she left that info out of her review.<br><br>3. After first appearance, I spoke with Ashley about the second case & offered a discounted fee and multiple payment options. She didn't have to hire us to handle the second case if she didn't want to, but she and the family agreed to pay the additional $2000 for us to handle the second case.<br><br>4. More specifically, that evening Ashley texted me, \"Can you please start working to put the agreement together over the weekend. We are moving forward with the $2000. Thank.\" You can see this text in the photos on our Google business page. Only Ashley can say why she left this important info out of her review.<br><br>5. Ashley complains about the additional fee now, but she agreed to it & going to court is not like going to Publix. There are no BOGOs. Ashley knows she wouldn't do two jobs for the price of one. But for some reason, after initially agreeing to the fee for the second case, she now expects us to do the additional work for free.<br><br>6. After the first appearance, Ashley and the family were informed that her brother's case would go through a quiet period with little to no news. Transfer to Marion County could take up to 30 days & the State could take 2-4 weeks to deliver discovery to us.<br><br>7. Nevertheless, on Day 3 Brett contacted Ashley. Day 3 was a Sunday which meant Brett contacted her on a weekend. That is not surprising. Brett is a conscientous lawyer with a very kind and patient disposition.<br><br>8. Ashley says in her review that she contacted Brett's office & got no response. But our records show that, in additon to speaking on Day 3, Brett spoke with Ashley on Day 4, Day 6, and Day 7. Each of those calls lasted between 6 and 24 minutes. For reference, her brother's first court date wasn't until Day 36.<br><br>9. Furthermore, I was texted daily by another family member. At this point, to say there was no commnication is plainly and provably false. We went above & beyond any reasonable expectation of communication with this family throughout the time we had the cases and were prepared to continue to do so.<br><br>10. Finally, it's true that the cases were recently dismissed....for lack of jurisdiction. That's not the result of some grand legal manuvering. It's because a prosecutor looked at a map. <br><br>We're disappointed to see Ashley handle things this way, but we stand by our work, our policies, and our communication in this case. We reached back out to him on August 17.  Between August 17 and August 19 we had at least 3 phone calls and 45 text messages with you and your friend.  All of this was to work out a deal for you.  Specifically, in those text messages we agreed to take a smaller down payment than normal to accommodate your budget.  We also agreed to smaller monthly payments than usual to accommodate your budget. Like we do for ALL of our clients, we did all we could for you & when it was time to make a down payment, you backed off & then filed this review a week later.  We did all we could to work with you, but when it came time to get the deal done you decided to back out. Sometimes that’s how business goes.
