My partner, Michael, and I have been dealing with a complicated situation involving his mother, Claire, who sold him a house in 2020, leaving it in poor condition and filled with her belongings. Claire had previously removed several items from the property but, upon learning of a citation issued by the city regarding structural issues, she submitted a new list of demands for additional items. We declined to fulfill these demands on that specific date, but we never stated that she could not retrieve her items at a later time. When we declined, she sought legal representation, and her lawyer turned out to be Mr. Duke, who is in a personal relationship with Michael’s sister, Heather. Mr. Duke attempted to conceal their relationship, acting as though he had no ties to the family and seeming confused by the differences between Michael and his siblings. This raised significant concerns about conflicts of interest. Furthermore, Mr. Duke failed to disclose his personal connection to the family, which we believe influenced his handling of the case. Given the sensitive nature of the situation, including threats from Claire and the ongoing stress, we could not rely on Mr. Duke’s objectivity or professionalism.
